The following is the first in a series of weekly stories on MLB.com examining
each Major League club, position by position. Each Wednesday until Spring
Training camps open, we'll preview a different position. Today: Catchers.
ATLANTA -- Just one year ago, there was still reason to wonder who would end
up being the long-term solution for the Braves at catcher. Brian McCann's
big-league career was just four months old, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia's
finest credential was the hype generated by his tremendous offensive
potential.

McCann enters his second full Major League season with reason for great

"It would be hard for Ted Williams," Braves manager Bobby Cox joked. "But
yeah, Mac can really hit. For me, he's always been a .300 hitter, ever since
we first saw him."

While McCann hasn't come close to reaching Williams-like status, he certainly
has legitimized himself as a big-league hitter. And he won't even celebrate
his 23rd birthday until Feb. 20.
"I think you saw Brian McCann is going to be a solid Major League hitter,"
Chipper Jones said. "He's going to compete for batting titles. He was
tremendous this [past] year."
Had McCann not missed nearly three weeks after suffering a sprained left
ankle on May 20, he'd have compiled enough plate appearances to rank third in
the National League batting race -- trailing only Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez
(.344) and Florida's Miguel Cabrera (.339).

Along with a .333 batting average, McCann also slugged 24 homers, contributed
94 RBIs, posted a .388 on-base percentage and recorded a .572 slugging
percentage.
Among all NL catchers, McCann won the Triple Crown. Along with leading all
backstops in batting average and homers, he recorded 22 more RBIs than any of
his counterparts.

"I never expected any of this," McCann said. "It just makes you want to keep
working hard. We didn't win this year and I think that's what will make all
of us keep working hard in the offseason."

If there is a weakness to McCann's game, it's shown through the ease that
opposing base stealers have had with him behind the plate. Through his first
1 1/2 big-league seasons, he's thrown out just 26 of the 118 runners (22
percent) who have attempted to steal against him.
After throwing out just five of the 27 runners who attempted a steal against
him in 2005, McCann admitted that the increased speed of the game caused him
to rush a number of throws. This past season, the ankle may have proven to be
a definite factor.
With his ankle never truly regaining all of its strength, McCann was unable
to aggressively put pressure on his lead foot.

While McCann was proving himself at the Major League level, the 20-year-old
Saltalamacchia was struggling with his first taste of the Double-A Minor
League level. Considered by many to be the game's top catching prospect, he
went to Double-A Mississippi and hit just .230 with nine homers and 39 RBIs.

With Adam LaRoche's name floating in a few different trade rumors, some
Braves officials have indicated that they may soon start preparing
Saltalamacchia to play first base. But for now, it appears he'll begin this
season back in Mississippi as a catcher.
The Braves will likely start the season with either Brayan Pena or Corky
Miller as McCann's primary backup. The 25-year-old Pena struggled at the
beginning of 2006 season, when he decided to quit switch-hitting.
